Colville NF Fuels and Timber Project Update

May 2009

(projects in green indicate collaboration with NEWFC)

Planning:

Ferry County:

  • Deer Jasper Timber Sale – Inventories starting.
  • Herron Stewardship Sale – Appraisal completed. The sale will be added to Malo East Lake due to the appraisal and road costs within Herron.
  • Kettle Face Timber Sale – Inventoried last summer. Expect decision in 2010.
  • Hall Creek Thinning – Separate Decision Memos for the precommercial thinning and commercial thinning. PCT has approved NEPA. Thinning units are laid out.
  • Malo East Lake Stewardship Sale – Working on sale package. Will offer by fall of 2009.
  • North Sherman Pulp Units – These are units from North Sherman EIS that were analyzed but not sold due to low value. NEPA would have to be revisited. Lots of work would be needed to develop prescriptions, layout, mark, cruise, road engineering package, and sale package. This project will not proceed until other pulp opportunities are harvested.
  • Sherman Pulp Sale – Low priority due to low mark value.
  • Sherman Timber Sale – Inventories started.
  • Vulcan Stewardship Sale – Presolicitation out in March. Expect to advertise in June.

Stevens County:

  • Finn Stewardship Sale – Most of units laid out.
  • Fritz Demo 1 Pulp – Not the same as Fritz Demo Timber Sale. This was an optional unit that was not harvested. Unit is laid out, marked, and cruised but needs some rework. NEPA has been completed. Road maintenance plan needs to be developed as does a sale contract. This is not one of the easy pulp opportunities for the Forest Service to develop and will not proceed until other pulp opportunities are harvested. It is a low priority for completion due to low prices.
  • Summit Pierre Timber Sale – Inventoried last summer. Expect decision in 2009.

Pend Oreille County:

  • 49° North Settlement Sale ( Angel Peak) – Awarded in May 2009
  • Backblow Salvage Sale – Incorporates Backlakes Pulp Units and the blowdown. Advertised with bid date of 6/2/09.
  • Blue Ruby Sale – Part of Misery EA. Advertise in June 2009.
  • Geophysical II Thinning – A CE will be developed to cover the remaining project work of Geophysical Thinning. Original Geophysical CE caught in injunction over CEs.
  • Hanlon Timber Sale – Collaboration continues. Expect NEPA completed in 2009.
  • Jewel Rock Pit Development – A new 5 to 10 acre site. Incidental timber volume to be removed.
  • Lakes Stewardship Sale – Advertised. Bid date 5/29/09.
  • Limestone Timber Sale – Inventories started.
  • Powers Lake Timber Sale – Inventories started.
  • Slate Creek Thinning/Styx Creek Aspen – NEPA started. Expect decision by June 2009. 148 acres of lodgepole pine surrounding small pockets of stagnant aspen clones.

Implementation:

Ferry County:

  • Bangs Stewardship - Awarded to Vaagens. Harvest completed. Finishing service work.
  • Trout West Sale – Awarded to Vaagens. Inactive.

Stevens County:

  • Deadman Stewardship - Awarded to Vaagens. Harvested most of the tractor and cable units. Timber stand improvement work completed. Phase 2 of noxious weed treatment accomplished. Inactive
  • Huck Stewardship - Awarded to Vaagens. Pulp added to contract. Inactive.
  • Fritz Demo Timber Sale - Awarded to Boise. All tractor units completed. One cable unit left. Inactive.
  • Quartzite Stewardship - Awarded to Pend Oreille Valley Fibre and third partied to Vaagens. Only the cable units remain. Contract modification has been developed to include pulp material in sale. Inactive.
  • South Deep Timber Sale - Awarded to Stimson. Tractor units completed. Inactive.
  • Rogers Stewardship Sale – Awarded to Vaagens. Inactive.

Pend Oreille County:

  • Browns Lake Timber Sale - Awarded to Pend Oreille Valley Fibre and Third Partied to Vaagens. All cut to length, tractor, and cable completed. Inactive
  • Conger Timber Sale - Awarded to Vaagens. Inactive.
  • Geophysical Stewardship - Awarded to Vaagens. 90% completed. Is enjoined by the 7 th Circuit decision about Categorical Exclusions. Will redo the NEPA.
  • Halliday Salvage Sale – Awarded to MacArthur. Inactive
  • Kings Pit – Awarded to Nielsen Logging. Inactive.
  • Leadfoot Salvage – Awarded to Vaagens. Inactive.
  • Misery Lake Timber Sale – Awarded to Vaagens. Inactive.
